Matthew Stone
Matthew Stone is an artist and shaman based in London. He was recently named most influential person in the arts under 30 by the Sunday Times. His multidisciplinary and interrelated practice activates primarily photography, sculpture and performance. Stone produces photography, that dramatically portrays the intertwined bodies of friends and collaborators, stripped of context-locating clothing and locked in states of romanticised and visionary ecstasy.
Following his graduation from Camberwell, with a first degree in Painting in 2004, he was a formative member of the !WOWOW! art collective, exhibiting in many artist-led projects and throwing notorious art parties in squatted buildings - events which have since assumed the mantle of London urban legend.
In the past few years he has been researching the relevance of Optimism as a method for avant-garde thought and art practice. Stone s work revolves specifically around creative interactions and community, based on the idea that individual autonomy can be successfully combined with the power of collectivity.
Stone has participated in projects and exhibitions at the Serpentine, the Baltic, the Royal Academy, ICA and Tate Britain.
Born in 1982 London. Lives and works in London.
