Fritz Bornstück
Fritz Bornstück assembles his images with discarded remnants of civilization. Cigarette butts, weathered toys, empty bottles and broken lightbulbs are all reborn in a process that he describes as “cultural recycling.” These seemingly random piles of rubbish are often placed in tandem with nature, further underlining the abandoned nature of his motifs. Through the artist’s brushstrokes, the discarded items find a new meaning in their existence, whether it is being fertilized and giving way to new flowers, or simply being admired in its disarray. The artist finds inspiration in just as wide a range of sources, from artistic traditions of still life and landscape painting to popular culture, film, and the contents of his neighbour’s rubbish bins. Bornstück observes and collects fragments of humanity, and he presents his collections with both sincerity and irony, nonchalance and nostalgia, melancholy and hope.
