Jukhee Kwon
Jukhee Kwon transforms old abandoned books into sculptural pieces. Kwon believes destruction to be the starting point of creation. The end of the medium’s original form and purpose signals yet another beginning. The unique characteristics of each book - smell, wear and tear, hand-scribbled notes within the pages - are all carefully examined as the artist carries out her process of selecting her materials. Little tears and stains serve as traces of time and provide clues to the vast perosnal histories embedded within, and these personal narratives offer areas of meditation beyond the books’ materiality. The works are completed through the repeated process of cutting and weaving. As each piece is formed and put on display, it continue the process of creating further dialogues between the materials, the artist, and the audience.
