Jan-Ole Schiemann
Jan-Ole Schiemann is a Cologne-based artist whose work builds on and challenges traditions of painting through collage-based techniques, constructing images that are at once sophisticated and playful. Schiemann's practice is grounded in gestural abstraction and the history of 20th century animation.
With his paintings, Schiemann often begins with a collection of references, including cut-outs of vintage cartoons and his own drawings, which he collages onto transparent slides and visually projects onto an unprimed canvas. Guided by the cast shadows and silhouettes of handmade stencils, Schiemann employs black ink to delineate contours in a mode that recalls classic cartoon production and meticulously applies thin layers of acrylic paint. Additional strokes of charcoal and oilstick create new spatial relationships between the pictorial background and foreground. The interplay of tonal gradations and overlapping elements lends itself to the distinct sense of kinetic energy and illusionistic depth that are hallmarks of Schiemann's work. Schiemann's drawings further demonstrate the artist's technical prowess as a draftsman. Using only graphite pencil, Schiemann simultaneously renders and erases to create compositions that are strikingly nuanced and architecturally complex. With his recent work, Schiemann continues to oscillate between figuration and abstraction while developing an idiosyncratic visual vocabulary that is recognizably the artist's own.
Jan-Ole Schiemann was born in 1983 in Kiel, Germany and is a graduate of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Albert Oehlen and Andreas Schulze (2007-2013). In 2019, Kasmin presented Schiemann's first solo New York exhibition, which debuted the artist's lauded Kavex series.
