Catherine Anholt

바다가 내려다보이는 영국 데본의 스튜디오에서 작업 중인 캐서린 안홀트는, 1985년 영국 왕립미술대학에서 석사 학위를 받기 전부터 이미 수많은 페인팅과 드로잉을 제작해왔다. 어린 시절부터 꾸준히 기록해 온 비주얼 다이어리와 병행해 작업하는 그녀는, 루소나 마티스를 연상시키는 몽환적인 이미지를 그려내며, 전통적이거나 종교적인 미술 양식을 떠올리게 하는 독특한 질감과 선을 통해 다양한 시각적 문화에 대한 오마주를 제시한다.

 

지난 30여 년간 남편 로렌스와 함께 200권이 넘는 동화책을 제작하며 삽화가로도 활동해온 그녀는, 창작과 스토리텔링에 대한 부부의 공동된 열정을 정글처럼 우거진 정원에 둘러싸인 집에서 꽃피워왔다. 안홀트의 회화는 모성애, 가족, 자연이라는 주제를 중심으로 자신의 삶과 예술적 여정을 반영하며, 나아가 우리 삶을 이루는 다양한 형태의 연대에 대한 은유적 고찰을 담아낸다
