In collaboration with Shoshana Wayne Gallery, CHOI&CHOI Gallery presents ‘The Life II’ by Yu Jinyoung. The exhibition follows the artist’s earlier exhibition ‘The Life’ with CHOI&CHOI Gallery COLOGNE in 2018. It centers around Yu’s continued exploration of different societal structures within contemporary society, utilizing several anecdotal narratives to highlight the unbearable weight of ‘life’.

초이앤초이 갤러리는 쇼샤나 웨인 갤러리와 공동으로 유진영 작가의 개인전 'The Life II'를 선보인다. 이번 전시는 2018년 초이앤초이 갤러리 쾰른에서 선보인 작가의 개인전 'The Life’의 연장선으로 현대 사회 내의 다양한 사회 구조에 관한 작가의 지속적인 탐구에 초점을 두며, 다양한 서사를 담은 작품들을 통해 터무니없이 무거운 ‘삶’의 무게를 논한다.

작가 소개
유진영(b. 1977)은 반투명 조각 캐릭터들을 통해 인간의 외면과 내면의 차이를 탐구한다. 그녀의 작품은 오랜 기간 마음의 상처를 숨기며 침묵을 지켜온 주부들부터 기득권층의 변덕에 의해 불안감에 시달리는 직장인들에 이르기까지 광범위한 관점의 서사를 보여주지만, ‘사회적 관계들로 인해 파생되는 불안감을 드러내고 사회 속 관습에 영합하여 다른 이들의 고통을 방관하고 숨기는 인류의 모습을 조명하는’ 일관적인 메시지를 전달한다. 이러한 작가의 작품의도는 부담스럽게 활기찬 것모습을 대변하는 밝은 채색의 석고와 존재를 드러내기를 거부하는 내면을 묘사하는 투명한 PVC, 두 가지 상반된 재료를 통해서도 나타난다.

 <전시 소개 글>

유진영의 작품은 한 편의 연극을 보는 듯하다. 섬세히 연출된 연극 속 주어진 배역은 각각의 캐릭터가 얼굴에 착용한 가면으로 시각화 된다. 단단히 굳어진 석고 가면과 연약하고 투명한 몸체 사이의 상반되는 대조는 표면적으로 드러나는 얼굴이 인물 본연의 내면으로부터 분리되어 있음을 암시한다. 억압받고 억압하는 배역의 인물들로 어두컴컴한 무대를 채우는 작가에게는 우리의 삶 또한 일종의 연극이다. 일상의 연극에 동참하는 우리 모두는 사회적 제도와 규율을 따르며 다양한 가면을 쓴다.

 이러한 배역들은 작품의 배경에 따라 변하기도 하는데, 한 장면의 억압자가 다른 장면에서 탄압받는 모습으로 등장하기도 한다. 다양한 서사를 통해 우리 사회에 자리잡은 권력 구조들을 탐구하는 유진영은 어쩌면 모든 인간 관계가 본질적으로 불균형하고 불공평한 것은 아닐까 의문을 제시한다. 가정에서도, 직장에서도, 그리고 나아가 인생에 있어서도 각자 맡은 역할은 변할 수 있지만 항상 누군가는 더 많은 힘을 가지고 있고 더 높은 위치에 있다.

 
유진영의 모든 캐릭터들은 이러한 위계질서를 유지하기 위해 주어진 역할을 맡고 가면을 쓴다. 투명한 PVC제질의 얇고 가녀린 몸이 단단히 굳어버린 가면의 무게를 지탱하고, 등장인물 중 일부는 다른 이들의 무게까지 함께 안고가는 모습을 보이기도 한다. 현대사회 속에서 살아가기 위해 자발적으로 만들어낸 우리의 수많은 얼굴들을 포착하는 작가는 이러한 겉모습에 가려진 진정한 자신은 어떤 모습일까 곰곰이 생각해 본다. 현란하게 꾸며진 표면, 피할 수 없는 위계질서와 억압적인 사회구조의 이면에 존재하는 내면은 투명하고 텅 빈 껍데기만 남았을지도 모른다.

 
우리 사회의 불평등에 대한 불만은 작가의 작품을 접하는 많은 사람이 공감할 수 있지만, 그녀의 작업에는 지극히 개인적이고 자서적인 요소들 또한 존재한다. 유진영은 어린시절부터 많은 사회적 불안에 시달렸고 관심의 대상이 되는 것을 꺼렸다고 한다. 비록 현재 작가로서 그녀는 작품을 전시하고 메세지를 전달하는 외향적인 표현방식을 추구하지만, 어두운 갤러리에 투명한 몸체를 숨기며 타인의 시선을 피하는 내향적인 특성 또한 작업에 담는다. 등장하는 캐릭터들의 미묘하고 무표정에 가까운 표정은 부모의 언어적 폭력을 피하기 위해 얼굴 표정의 미묘한 변화를 재빨리 알아차려야 했던 그녀의 어린 시절을 반영하기도 한다.

 
유진영은 본인의 자아와 가족 관계에 대한 탐구를 시작으로 사회의 모든 영역에 만연되어 있는 혼란과 불평등을 다룬다. 개인에서 집단, 사회에서 인류로 작업의 초점을 옮기며 너무나도 버거운 '삶'의 무게에서 그 누구도 벗어날 수 없는 우리의 현실을 직면한다. 그녀는 우리 모두에게 존재하는 이중성을 가시화하며 이 부조리한 순환을 깰 해결책을 찾기 위해서는 무엇보다도 우리 내면의 성찰이 필요하다고 권고한다.

About Yu Jin Young
Working with a cast of semi-transparent sculpted characters, Yu Jin Young explores the disparity between the outward and inward self. While her work has delved into a wide range of perspectives from that of long-suffering housewives to anxiety ridden workers catering to the whims of the uber-rich, Yu’s conceptual impetus is consistently clear: to acknowledge the anxiety of social situations, and to expose the implicit acts of cover-up one engages in as they adhere to social conventions. This implied critique of social mores is further developed through the use of two opposing materials, and the tropes they represent, as the disguises and clothing rendered in vibrantly painted plaster are juxtaposed with a yearning for invisibility embodied in the weightless and transparent PVC.

<Exhibition Text>

Theatricality is at the core of Yu Jinyoung’s oeuvres. For her carefully crafted plays, the artist assigns each character with a role, as visualized by the masks worn on their faces. The jarring contrast between the hardened clay masks and the delicate, transparent bodies suggests that these roles are superficial and separate from their true inner selves. Atop a darkened theatre stage, some play the part of the oppressor, whilst others play the part of the oppressed. To the artist, our life is a theatrical production, filled with ever-changing roles that we willingly accept in order to fit in.

 
These roles, however, change with each backdrop, and we may see an oppressor from one scene play a victim in another. Yu continues to explore different power structures through anecdotal narratives, and delivers a message that perhaps all human relationships are intrinsically unbalanced and unfair. Throughout the ever-changing dynamics, hierarchy remains as a pervasive constant. Someone is always at the mercy of another - whether it is at home, in the workplace, or in life.

Each one of Yu’s characters plays a role to maintain this status quo. The weight of this hardened façade is carried by their thin bodies, and some even appear to carry the weight of others’. As the artist captures the many faces that we have created for ourselves, she also implores us to contemplate on who we truly are. Behind the flamboyant exterior, outside of the ever-present hierarchies and oppressive social structures, we may be left with a hollow shell that has been conditioned to be invisible.
Whilst her frustration at the inequities of our world resonates with many who come across her work, there is a noted level of self-reference that hints at the artist behind the figures. Yu Jinyoung says she has dealt with immense social anxiety and avoided being the centre of attention from a young age. Though she as an artist essentially chooses extroverted expression to convey her narratives, her own introverted nature manifests in the transparency of the bodies of her pieces, where the darkened gallery almost completely conceals the vulnerable inner selves. The subtle, nearly impassive expressions on the masks also relate to her childhood, where she quickly had to notice the subtle differences in the facial expressions of her parental figures in order to avoid being berated.

 
The artist’s exploration of her family dynamics and her own ego ultimately led her to delve into the insecurities and inequalities that are prevalent in all areas of society. She shifts her focus from the individual, to society, to the world, and reflects on our reality where no one can escape the weight of ‘life’. Yu Jinyoung exposes the dualities that exist within all of us, and urges us to look inward for a solution to break this cycle.
